Our Journey, Mission, and Values

How We Started

Coinit Gold Investments started in 2004. Four years of studying the markets, global economic trends, currency wars, sovereign economic policies and an MBA resulted in the choice to include gold into my personal portfolio. The primary objectives being a hedge against our currency devaluation, wealth preservation and retained purchasing power. However, if the yields were aligned to an investing philosophy and returns, then I viewed it as an investment. Another primary determinant for choosing gold was that of the downside risk being capped at the melt value of the precious metal. This was an important consideration for me and believed it to be equally important for other gold buyers.  With this view in mind a balanced portfolio was created, comprising long term proof sets and Bullion coins/Kruger Rands. However, the study of economics, the concept of “a store of value” led me to the appreciation for coin collecting as an art and science, a philosophy that I integrated into my gold portfolio. Then circumstances began to change economically in SA. From 2008 to 2014, I invested and built a network of coin collectors/Investors. These people will now be referred to as COIN’s(Coin collectors and or coin investors). The principle of integrating the concepts of coin collecting into ones portfolio resulted in appropriate strategies being adopted that facilitated a long term view and exponential synergistic benefits. Finally I started to look for business opportunities within SA. I developed a criteria for scoring opportunities and almost naturally my hobby and passion of investment emerged at the apex of these options.

Change In The Markets

From 2013 the market started changing. Two primary financial factors began to emerge. Real incomes were capped by inflation targeting and the Rand started a rapid devaluation based on government deficit spending, costly social programmes, additional money supply, misguided inflation measures and corruption. This resulted in disposable incomes for investing becoming smaller and smaller. This emergence, together with my mission of wealth creation for our club members, and the underpinning construct of “A store of value,” resulted in the adaptation of CGI’s business model to include the purchasing of gold from the market and the distribution to customers who need gold for the products they manufacture. Studies show that globally people liquidate gold assets and jewelry during unfavorable economic times like the world and SA are currently experiencing.

This change in the business model made explicit the need for a sound supply chain and distribution strategy, but more importantly enhanced our value proposition to club members and designed to increase their wealth over time. The improved supply chain strategy led me to strategic partnerships which are integrated into our business model.
